Wanting to Belong

by Regis Boff

Try looking at it from a young high school girl’s perspective say around 1959. You have been conditioned to be shy and unassertive because both might make you unlikeable or worse unlovable. You know what most people like because that is always obvious in high school so you dress the way the cool people do and you smile at the right times to let everyone know you are one of them, but most of all you keep quiet, participating as little as possible. Eventually you really no longer have anything to say and you marry a boy who is beneath you and have a life half lived.
Wonder, if you have time, why FaceBook only lets you “like.” Wanting to belong endangers us all.
