I Still Regret not being Cruel Enough.
by Regis Boff
I once told a blind country western singer, while “negotiating” with him, that he was “lucky to be blind, so he never had to see himself.” It could have been a better-structured insult in retrospect but when you are pissed-off, great language can fail you.
I was trying to hurt him, not recognizing that a lifetime of blindness would carry with it an immunity of sorts. It would have hurt him more perhaps to tell him he was fat, taking a shot that this might not have been known to him, being, as he certainly was, unfamiliar with mirrors. I still regret not being cruel enough.
