Chasing Tampax for Melanie Safka

by Regis Boff

She is to become my first touring job in America soon after this video. I had been driving a Checker Cab in Manhatten.
It was three shows into the tour before I saw her on stage. My first night I stayed with her two dogs in the dressing room while she performed upstairs. I could hear her.
In Cleveland, the next stop, she took me aside before she went on and asked me to find her Tampax.
It 9:00 at night. The city was dark and empty. The venue was in nowhere, and I wasn’t entirely sure what Tampax was. I was from Pittsburgh.
My triumph that night propelled me into a career of crisis management second to only a few in the arts.
